As a suggestion, on the point of balance, how about making them 'erode' over time? Essentially just make them disappear very slowly by ABM or node timers. Times could vary between different surfaces. Just an idea.
I am not so sure, it might be better if the cactus armor had increased protection but much less durability. That would make more sense to me. Cactus armor and wood armor have the identical protection. I just checked it for each piece of armor individually. Even the shields are equal. Wood shield equals cactus shield. No one can really answer that but you, it depends on so many other factors. Try it and see for yourself what your framerate is with and without those features enabled, then translate that into your own perception of 'cost'

You really should use the built-in vector helpers, for distance especially. It still looks to me like a rather inefficient way to accomplish this, though I do not fully understand your requirements.

Well it worked last time I tried it but that was a while ago, maybe something has changed in MTG. I will look at it again as soon as I get a chance but in the meantime, using one the inventory mods should fix it.
