What happened to cyan wool!

Nothing. You're most likely using a newer client. There was a change some time ago that allowed MT worlds to use more than 4096 diffrent nodes. A side-effect is that one of the old nodes (a diffrent one per world) becomes now an unknown node for newer clients.

It might be possible to write a script that would run once over an old world and assign new numbers to these old nodes. After that, new clients wouldn't have problems anymore. Unfortionately, we don't have such a script yet; and even if we had, there'd still be the issue of contacting Redcrab.

I'm currently trying to recreate the set of mods Redcrab uses in order to run the saved world file with as few changes as possible. Some moreblocks/stairsplus nodes still give a challenge. When that's done, it'll be made available for download. Seeing the world in full is a huge gain over the normal connection. You do see huge buildings which normally take forever to laod.

In order to enjoy the saved local copies of Redcrabs server in full, I've created a modpack/game that emulates Redcrabs server as close as possible. The modpack can be found as an attachment here.

Erthome has offered me space for the downloaded/saved map, so it ought to be available for download eventually. I've hesistated until now because without that modpack above it's not too much fun - too much changed in recent versions of the mods.

It seems that minetest is getting less and less people. Most likely that minecraft is not the game to play any more and less people are wanting to play these kind od sandbox game.

I disagree. I think you are looking at the numbers on the popular servers to reach that conclusion, but fail to take under consideration the recent events.

Redcrab's server recently underwent a period of instability, where many users believed their creations were going to be wiped (by the hosting company, for non-payment). That was fixed, but there seem to be other server-related issues. This has kept some people away from the server.

Add in the fact that there have been a few new servers recently, which is diluting the pool of players playing on the older servers.

Don't count the server dead yet! There's still construction going on.

...and finally: Here is that part of the map I saved with sfan5's special client while we where afraid that the server would go down. While that danger has been averted, there's still a lot to gain from exploring the map in singleplayer: You can actually see some of those large structures that have been built on the server (Smokis non-deathstar, Wyverns angel statue, Topywos construction, ...). Some other buildings (especially those of AspireMint) may be enjoyed directly on the server, but it's still easier to look at them when loaded in full from your local storage.

I hope that someone with a fast machine and good graphics card can do one or two short videos showing some of those great buildings! There are also several great towns where an overview might be intresting.

In order to run the world in singleplayer, unzip Redcrab.zip (ca. 100 MB) and place it in your worlds/ folder. Unzip redcrab_game.zip (ca. 2 MB) and place it in your games/ folder. The mapgen is already set to singlenode, so no new blocks will be created (those could lead to mapgen griefing if enabled - at some points of the world, there's only a thin layer recorded).

Please keep in mind that the world file is only provided to players on Redcrab who want to get an overview and explore the map in a way that is not possible on the server itself (loading chunks over network is slow; some buildings are almost invisible due to that). You do not gain the same rights here as you would with open source software as far as the map is concerned! For the liscence of redcrab_game.zip, see the liscences in the individual mod folders. For the map - there's no liscence permitting you anything other than viewing it in your local world and doing videos on it like you could on Recrabs server (if network code would be faster). If you want to do anything else with it, you first need to contact Redcrab and/or the individual builders.

Ah yes: Please note that cyan wool will most likely be an unkown block. At least the graphics bug with flowing water/lava ought to be eliminated if you run it in singleplayer with client/server beeing the same version.

Wow thanks for finding somewhere to host the map file. I am spending a lot of time now just looking around the server everywhere. The only annoying thing is that the travel-net stations do not connect on the same network but you can still travel ok. As long as you know the coordinates. I suppose I could maybe do a video showing the best places on the server. That would be fun for me to do :)
