Minetest System Requirements

by Josh » Mon Oct 28, 2013 03:51

I know this has been discussed before: https://forum.minetest.net/viewtopic.php?id=11 but i thought i would create a new thread about this as it may be useful to people.

Minimum Sytem Requirements:
CPU: 1.0Ghz Single/Dual/Quad Core
RAM: 500MB
GFX: Nvidia Geforce FX5500 256MB or higher (I have actually tested MT on an FX5500, and it ran pretty well)
HDD: Probably around 1GB
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Reccomended Sytem Requirements: (Some of these are my specs, the game runs quite well for me, 50FPS in windowed mode, 30+ in fullscreen
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo 1.86Ghz
RAM: 500MB (I actually have 2GB)
GFX: Nvidia Geforce 6600 256MB (I use this)
HDD: 1GB (I actually have a 250GB HDD, but i think 1GB is what minetest would consume)

-
I don't really know about ATI Radeon cards, but i have tested minetest on an old dusty 128MB ATI rv280 Radeon 9200 Pro with a open source driver but it had a few problems (Some inventory images were missing) and i got about 15-20FPS

Do you think these specs are accurate? Let me know.

An innocent kitten dies every time you top-post.
I am on the Voxelands Forums more often than here.

nice...

but...

at least u need a dualcore CPU to have more fun with this game.
more fun means that u can play this game at fps 30 and more...
the fps vary during the game.. sometimes this value has about 20 but that should not be all the time...

and..
.. minetest classic do not need so much computerpower to test the game with minimal features as u can find in the normal minetest game.

.. when u play online on a high-performance server, your fps has better values.

Revised System Requirements for Windows XP/Vista/7/8:

  • Intel Pentium 4 @ 2.0 Ghz or greater.
  • 512mb of ram, will depend on version of Windows installed.
  • 100mb of free disk space
  • UDP stacks in networking.
  • 64mb of video memory. (My own reccomendation is 512mb to 1gb)
  • Working internet connection.

My reccomended for Windows:

  • Intel Pentium 4 @ 3.2ghz with Hyperthreading
  • 2gb of ram, will depend on the version of Windows.
  • 1gb of free disk space.
  • UDP stacks in networking and exception in Windows Firewall
  • 512mb of video ram.
  • High speed internet connection.

( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) ( ͡o ͜ʖ ͡o) [$ ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) $] ( ͡$ ͜ʖ ͡$) ヽ༼ຈل͜ຈ༽ノ

My image and media server is back online and is functioning as normal.

This could go in the wiki somewhere.

Also, the requirements of the *dedicated* server are pretty low; I'm running it on a machine running at ~400MHz with 128 MB of RAM and it works pretty good.

You would be better advised to configuration settings.
Proper settings produce 10 times better results.

Why a highspeed connection? For me, minetest has always used < 1000 kbit/s...

I often run the game on a
PIII 2,5 GHz with some 1.7gb of RAM under WinXP.

It usually is playable with the occasional performance drop now and then. For servers with many mods such as those by VanessaE this is definitly at the very lower end of playability with some fun but enough to have a look around. For servers using the Classic branch it works quite well and even the Nostalgia game seems to be running at an acceptical pace.

I did use the machine to run a server in our LAN with no problems and I guess my internet connection would be by far the limiting factor if I where to run a public server.

I would like to start a...

Performance Data Collection
Get an unmodified (settings or mods) version of Minetest (use stable from main downloads).

Walk around an empty singleplayer map for a while, and then post the following data here:

  • Draw time
  • FPS
  • Your computer specs

And, if possible, do the same with Minecraft.

NOTE: Don't look straight at the ground or wall, try and get an average (!)

OpenGL is 2.1

basically a just-out-of the-box cheap eMachine - no special video card - vga out to hdtv

If the Minetest community was a certain evil corporation (which I will not mention the name of), then the system requirements would be:

Intel Celeron M @ 500 MHz
32MB RAM*
OpenGL 2* / DirectX 8 (DX11 for the best performance)
Around 20MB free HDD space

Pay $299.99 at the register :)

You wrote "System" wrong...

Also, like you showed "50FPS" with recommended system requirements, is something there wrong.
I get maximal 26 FPS with BlockMan's last build (OpenGL renderer in window mode 800x600) with system informations

My advice to everyone that minetest is laggy on their computers. Use linux. I was getting around 15-20 FPS on Windows XP, not to mention Windows 7, and now on Linux Kubuntu I get 35-50 FPS. Another advice: If you are on linux, the repository version is VERY outdated. Use https://launchpad.net/~minetestdevs PPA. My system specs:
RAM: 1 GB DDR2
Processor: Intel Pentium D Extreme Edition 3.2 GHz X2
GPU: Intel G945 Integrated Graphics shared to 128 MB
OS: Kubuntu Linux 14.10
Minetest version: 0.4.10-dev
OpenGL: 1.4 with old drivers, new won't work on my PC :(
400 character limit? Am I writing a book?

You should probably add another RAM in that. It will probably be *very* cheap.
7:42 PM - Bauglio: I think if you go to staples you could steal firmware from a fax machine that would run better than win10 does on any platform
7:42 PM - Bauglio: so fudge the stable build
7:43 PM - Bauglio: get the staple build

Yeah I'm saving money for 8 GB RAM.
