Concerning the name I would recommend to use a name for the engine and a name for each game. AFAIK the engine and Minetest game are seperated into two repos already, so it would make sense, right?

I have no concrete idea for the name but maybe this words could be used to create it:

Source, Resource, Origin, Element(s), Genesis, Grid, Array, Block(s), Seed

Concerning the engine development:
I think it would be a good idea to collect idea for gameplay etc. in the wiki. The more detailed the idea is the better.
If the idea is worked out there should be a list of needed engine features to achieve it. I guess in most cases they exist already.
Nevertheless there are of course ideas only feasible to do in the engine or at least in good way. This things should be opt-in or op-out and give the player a sensible number of options in the options menu/screen whatever. For example the player sprite/3D player feature.
Maybe it is worth considering build flags for certain features?

And before I forget:
I can program in C++ and know the basics of the irrlicht engine. I have some sparetime to spend and could help out. But I am not a C++ guru nor do I have the time to manage the whole code.

Just my two cents.

For a name how about OTB OutsideTheBlocks, MineCrew, WorldCreator, EpicBuilder, OpenCraft

I wonder which c++ code makes your hardware "click" =)

god knows. when a mod causes the game to bug half the time it drops back to menu the other half it kills the window entirely.

Wait, I got it..... WorldCraft. What would you rather play, Minecraft or WorldCraft? We're not just crafting mines, we're creating worlds. Also this isn't just one company writing software, this is about the people from all over the world coming together to create an epic game.

Realmcraft, then, is better, we already have "world" and "craft" together.

Realmcraft... Sounds like it needs a lot of medieval/fantasy options, therefore going with the Minecraft theme, which is not what we are trying to do...
I actually like WorldCraft...
I have done NOTHING!

Minecraft isn't medieval! a bit fantasy, yeah. and we can just go realistic medieval, like song of ice and fire!(game of thrones).
landcraft then? :)

worldcraft is problematic because we have world of warcraft. it's just confusing. and warcraft and worldcraft sound similliar.

I don't like realms... I'd like a name with "block" or "cube" in it, and without "craft".

did you try to say it aloud? "Worldcraft". it's nearly impossible to tell whether you're talking about -currently- MT or warcraft. war and world just sound too alike. do you like "minedraft" name, then, for example?

my main idea is to aim for something unique and outstanding. Realmcraft, Dwarves, Legacy Builder, Minefication, you name it.

Names are irrelevant. That's why I like "minetest" - it's just random.

Names are not irrelevant. Names can make or brake a games fame.

Too crap a name and nobody will touch it or waste time in it. Also if it sounds too much like already established games it will also damage the reputation of the game.

I know this game was inspired by Infiniminer and Minecraft and I think started as a c++ clone. There are many different ways to name it that do not involve either mine or craft in the name.

I also like the idea of the engine being named different than the game part.

And concerning

I think it best to give that right to the moderators of the forum. They are already trusted to keep the forum a safe place and keep the Irc channel clean and safe too. Giving them rights would be the ideal step. Since they are many pulling requests and features into the game could be done in a voting manner.

First they pull or push(whatever the way it is in github) the most needed bug fixes or regular fixes there are and for the future they can post about if in the forums telling the community of coming changes. As soon as all mods agree they can do a new version.

Version 4.3 can remain as the stable for some time and until a new stable -ish version comes all will be unstable or experimental builds.

Sounds good setting up a system like that. At least if the moderators are willing to take this extra work on them. Maybe there's a need for more moderators. Preferably with a bit of programming knowledge.

p.s. I like the name minetest. The game tests your skill to mine, it's also a bit like my test (to build) and I'm used to it.

Half-serious: Someone already thought/posted about calling the game Mesetint (anagram from Minetest)

EDIT: lol, I searched for mesetint and found out it was already called so for a while (so far being original...) http://minetest.net/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=41293#p41293

@Topywo: actually, "mesetint" used to be the name given to the main "game" that was supplied with the engine at one time (I keep thinking late 0.3.x or early 0.4-dev is when it changed to "minetest" and then to "minetest_game" after that).

I discussed this on IRC as well, and totally approve. celeron55 is the only one with push rights on GIT right now. Although I fully understand being careful about what happens to his project, things are no longer advancing when he's not around to check other people's codes and merge them. I consider this is suffocating the project... unless the situation changes MineTest will barely have a few new features next year at this date. It would make me sad to see Celeron "robbed" of his project and the c55-minetest left in the dust, but he has to trust someone else with the code else a new version that goes on would have to be created.

Thankfully this is changing. c55 announced that he'll be trusting a few developers to have GIT write access as well. Those who are interested must complete a survey, which can be found here: http://c55.me/temp/mt_dev_survey/ Hopefully after he takes the decision things will get a lot better, and there will be no need to fork and divide the project (which would have a very harmful side as well).
