FOSS gamedev and creative worlds

Resently I came across the manga for upcoming anime, Flying Witch. In one chapter, the trio encounters a flying whale construct which reminded me alot of Ghibli’s Castle in the Sky. I thought it would be fun to build.


The source material of only 14 pages was enough to get an idea of scope of the project. First off I needed to find more reference material to base the 3D build off of.

I found this image by googling ‘Blue Whale Model’ from TF3DM website.



This was perfect since it had both top and side views from which to build from. I took the image enlarged and tile-mosiac so each tile was 5×5 pixels with overall length about 400 blocks.

This is how far I got so far....



Needs work but on it's way. Currently extruding levels with worldedit copy. Some of the problems is I can't seem to make deepstone stairs, slab or panels. Plan to use the texture of deepstone for the belly. Also I would love to have it included for the circular saw. Also column form for circular saw would be nice. I can do it with CNC but the target server VE-building doesn't support technics mod.

Big large but there is a ruin of a small town that sits on top of the whale.

Of course, I'm building on my own computer then exporting it via world edit which cuts down the time building a lot. We need more showcase builds to show up the minecraft guys.

Well back to the build... Somethings don't work out as planned which is why I'm sharing this build from start to finish. It's so people can see how to take their own ideas and working them into minetest.



I figure I just copy the first level every 10 blocks and be done faster... instead it screwed up. Rethink time.

I'm now working on a ship building technic of laying a keel and putting the ribs of the whale. Pain trying to plot out each rib but also each section isn't perfect circle. Blue Whales are a oddball egg shape. Skinning this will take time. Sigh.

If it's a map IMHO simply for me it's, it's a building in Minetest, for God's Love...
And better try other thing, the simple fact that is a building makes it a map!
If be about make a Minetest version about the "Flying Witch" anime...

Anyways, your progress is good, why you don't try some mods to make build that "building" easier?

This build is gonna be pretty sa-weet. Cant wait for the finished result.

Life gets in the way... might have some time this weekend depending how the comic con goes. The real purpose is to show a project from start to finish and how we can up our game against minecraft by showing minetest is better... not worse.
