Well in any case I wouldn't mix work with leisure. If you can make money modding via whatever financing you think is appropriate, more power to you, but I'd treat it as a bonus, not a substitute to employment. A job is a steady income, donations and ads aren't.

E.g. curiosity, your brain always willing to learn, your hunger and sexuality. The best way to avoid being manipulated by propaganda/advertisement is to avoid itself in the ...

Advertisers pay the people providing the space for ads, and they're paid by the people making the ads. Ads, like donations, do not force anyone to buy. Though, donations won't pay you according to clicks/views, you have to make the sale. Now, if you're easily manipulated by ads, that's not something...

the LGPL allows it, so long as they publish any changes they make to LGPL'd code (engine). Changing the license now wouldn't make a difference, they just couldn't use future versions the same way.

Dev funding has been discussed, though there never was much agreement on the best method. There's also the question of fairness, what if some devs gets paid for flashy features and others work for free on the less fun stuff, what then? Mod devs are free to ask for money, though i still think adfly i...

Free software attracts a lot of anti-establishment types who neither want to pay or be subjected to ads, devs (should) know this coming in. Still, i'd go with adfly first, freemium second, and donations last.

don't really need a mod for the water part, just add this to the end of mapgen.lua -- Flooded World local WATER_LEVEL = 100 local ymaxq = (80 * math.floor(32 / 80)) + 47 for i=1,11 do minetest.register_ore({ ore_type = "scatter", ore = "default:water_source", wherein = "air", clust_scarcity = 1, clu...

But what I mean is, a good intention is worth nothing if it is not backed by changes in the structure. Observed from the outside it is just someone else deciding. I hope that it will be easier to contribute to Freeminer than to Minetest. I think the point of forking is to let other people decide, o...

So what is the structural difference to the Minetest development? Are you doing something different or is it just "Minetest without the people we don't like"? being dissatisfied with the decisions other community members were making I rather get the impression they want to take a different directio...

singlenode with just calc_lighting is what I started with :p Do you think i'd get the same result with the now working set_lighting()? I can't really accept having a map split down the middle by two different light levels :/ I could also file a GH issue if that helps.

Problem is, I did it exactly in that order :/ Tried it again, here's the code and result: minetest.register_on_mapgen_init(function(mgparams) minetest.set_mapgen_params({mgname="singlenode", flags="nolight", flagmask="nolight"}) end) minetest.register_on_generated(function(minp, ma...

I didn't expect 1 and 2 to work in tandem but i had to try after all else. Regarding #3, that may be a bug considering others are getting the same crash [ post here and the one below]. I think minetest assumes y < 0 to be underground, which would explain why nolight would give pitch black and calc_l...

Well as a kid I did learn perl and php from books, and html, javascript, css from playing with various websites' source. My friends used Frontpage 98 and kept asking me how I did what I did. I think Lorenzo is right, there's no shortcut to learning this stuff.

Dunno, even doing html/css/javascript etc. i've always found WYSIWYG/visual editors to be more limiting and time consuming than simply using a text editor, and certainly no substitute for a good book/tutorial.

I don't really see what the big challenge is, there are already plenty of mods with a ton a custom machines that produce all sorts of things.
