OldCoder Finerealms

by OldCoder » Fri Oct 09, 2015 08:13

This thread is for OldCoder Finerealms, a museum world that presents cities and individual builds from multiple worlds.

Build privileges are restricted, but everybody is invited to visit. There are some nice areas. For example, check out Little Italy during the day or the Pukaton Reactor at night. Leyadel, a huge ancient city, is worth a visit. We've even got Hill Valley, 1955, complete with Doc Brown's DeLorean and Time Travel Train.

Additionally, former ChainLynx, Veritas, and Zegaton builders will find their cities here, largely intact and working with Minetest 0.4.13.

The world is located at:

Your phone or window isn't wide enough to display the code box. If it's a phone, try rotating it to landscape mode.
Code: Select all
World:  OldCoder Finerealms

Build privileges and skins:

Don't request build privileges or skins in the forum thread. If you'd like either, or you have other requests, you can contact me as follows:

* By /query OldCoder at Freenode IRC or OldCoder IRC (irc.oldcoder.org)
* By email to oldcoder@yahoo.com
* In-game, some days or nights (type OldCoder followed by a message)
* By forum PM (the other three methods are better)

Bugs and warnings:

* Expect the world to load slowly on your first visit to the new version
* Travelnets and teleporters don't work yet
* Lots of unknown nodes
* Plenty more bugs you bet
* The world will be down at times for work
* Interact is limited to senior builders
* "Areas" information hasn't been ported yet

Notes on the modset:

Finerealms uses a new "_game" that I've started. The new "_game", known as "museum_game", supports about 160 diverse mods patched to work together and to support an optional "museum" mode.

In "museum" mode, ultimately, some ABMs and timers will be modified or disabled so as to preserve a world in its original state.

The modset is one of the largest that I've attempted. It's been interesting to try to get all of the mods to work together.

Representative mods include:

Argos Rotate, Columnia, Dark Age, Farming Redo, Home Decor, Ice Tools, Many Mobs, Mesecar, Mesecons, Modern Pack, More Stairs, My Lights, News, Pie Redo (yum), Pipeworks, PolBox, Poudlard, Riventest, Shadow Blocks, Technic, and part of the Lord of the Test "_game".

Typical scenes:

Set force field to turn on at night, using solar panel. Working great!
If you build it, they will come!

Finerealms is being relaunched as a museum world that collects a number of worlds and individual builds in one place.

Presently, Finerealms includes the same Minerealms builds as before, plus oOChainLynxOo's world, Zegaton, Hill Valley from "Back to the Future", and other places. Future additions will include Spookington Hall, New York City, Pripyat, and worlds that I collected years ago such as Holamundo and Harbor.

Four builds have been added to Finerealms: Spookington Hall, Eiffel Tower, World in a Box, and World in a Cube. The associated teleport commands are:

Your phone or window isn't wide enough to display the code box. If it's a phone, try rotating it to landscape mode.
Code: Select all
Command       Takes you to
===========   ============
/eiffel       Eiffel Tower in Coderland
/spook        Spookington Hall in Coderland
/worldbox     World in a Box  in Coderland
/worldcube    World in a Cube in Coderland

As an experiment, I've modified some mobs code so as to produce ghosts that spawn only inside Spookington Hall.

This copy of the Eiffel Tower is from Wizard School and is by Quark.

Spookington Hall is by PEAK. For more information, click on the following link:

World in a Box and World in a Cube are MC builds licensed under Creative Commons Attribution-NoDerivs 3.0 Unported. For attribution purposes, the rights holder is Nefashus.

I've added New York City V2.1 by jp and jduartemiller to Finerealms. For more information on the project, see the following link:

viewtopic.php?f=12&t=9496

I've added the version of the Twin Towers created by mccomase and myself to Finerealms as well; this build is in the Coderland region.

To visit the jp-jduartemiller version of New York City, go to Finerealms at minetest.org port 30012. Type any of the following commands there:

Your phone or window isn't wide enough to display the code box. If it's a phone, try rotating it to landscape mode.
Code: Select all
Command       Takes you to
===========   ============
/liberty      Statue of Liberty
/midscrape    Middle Skyscraper District
/nyc          New York City
/nyclib       New York City Library
/timessquare  Times Square
/ussent       USS Enterprise

To visit the mccomase-OldCoder version of the Twin Towers, use this command:

Your phone or window isn't wide enough to display the code box. If it's a phone, try rotating it to landscape mode.
Code: Select all
Command       Takes you to
===========   ============
/twintowers   mccomase-OldCoder Twin Towers in Coderland

This post is for Puka, who requested it, and for Minetest server hosts.

est31's leaftest project adds a very nice, perhaps essential, feature to large Minetest worlds: Addressable, scrollable, and zoomable maps that work in Web browsers. For additional credits, see the end of this post.

The feature works in multiple browsers, but not in all browsers. Browser issues aside, the feature is more than simply functional. Howl describes the results as:

"This is beauty :)"

You can use leaftest to map a world, then list starting points as simple URLs of the following form:

http://minetest.org/finemap/#20/-12351.00/44.50

Note: The preceding link doesn't work for me as "Open in New Tab". However, it does work when clicked on directly.

The starting-point links go to maps that can be zoomed via the mouse wheel or using +/- buttons in the maps. You can click and drag to scroll.

Coords are likely to change, but the preceding link presently displays the South part of New York City in Finerealms:

Image

Here are maps for some of the starting points in Finerealms:

ChainLynx: http://minetest.org/finemap/#21/-24450/-27869

Finetown: http://minetest.org/finemap/#21/-217/127

Hill Valley 1955: http://minetest.org/finemap/#22/-17000/-28092

Howlsylvania: http://minetest.org/finemap/#22/-10555/-10740

Little Italy: http://minetest.org/finemap/#22/116/-60

Pukaton: http://minetest.org/finemap/#22/-1133/106

Sokotello: http://minetest.org/finemap/#21/-19084/-28195

South New York: http://minetest.org/finemap/#20/-12351.00/44.50

Sparky's Flying Base: http://minetest.org/finemap/#22/-20940/-28263

The Flying Base is the plane-like object in the middle.

Statue of Liberty: http://minetest.org/finemap/#21/-12443/945

Veritas Stadium: http://minetest.org/finemap/#21/-27575/-28050

Zegaton: http://minetest.org/finemap/#21/-20985/-28100

Setup is mostly for experienced server owners or developers.

Requirements include cmake, gcc, git, ImageMagick, wget, zlib, and other development tools. The ImageMagick delegates for the PNG format and possibly for other formats need to be installed along with ImageMagick.

If you don't have a high-power PC, replace -j 8 below with: -j 2

Your phone or window isn't wide enough to display the code box. If it's a phone, try rotating it to landscape mode.
Code: Select all
DEVDIR=$HOME/leaftest
mkdir -p $DEVDIR && cd $DEVDIR
git clone --recursive https://github.com/est31/leaftest.git
mv     leaftest/* .  # Note the period at the end
rm -fr leaftest
git clone https://github.com/Rogier-5/minetest-mapper-cpp.git
cd minetest-mapper-cpp
cmake . && make -j 8 && mv minetestmapper ..
cd ..

Your phone or window isn't wide enough to display the code box. If it's a phone, try rotating it to landscape mode.
Code: Select all
rm -fr colors.txt
# Courtesy of VanessaE
wget http://minetest.org/colors.txt

Note: This procedure is for SQLite3 worlds as opposed to LevelDB worlds. For LevelDB worlds, the requirements would be slightly greater and a few steps would be slightly different. I may test the LevelDB procedure, and post it, at a later date.

At this point, copy a world's "map.sqlite" and "world.mt" files into the current directory.

In theory, the copy isn't needed. You can use a Minetest world's files, in-place, as the basis for a map. However, for this approach to work, you need to shut down the world, possibly overnight. So, my version of the procedure uses a copy of the files instead.

Your phone or window isn't wide enough to display the code box. If it's a phone, try rotating it to landscape mode.
Code: Select all
cp -p /foo/map.sqlite .
cp -p /foo/world.mt .

It's advisable to shut down your world while you make the copy. If you don't shut down, the mapping procedure will probably work regardless, but the odds of problems will be greater.

At this point, the directory $HOME/leaftest should include a data file named colors.txt, copies of some world files, the program file minetest-mapper-cpp, a script named mapper.sh, and two subdirectories named leaflet-hash and www.

Next, create the "bash" script shown below in the same directory.

You might call the script, for example, "makeleafmap.bash". Replace -215,2,157 with the coordinates for spawn in your world. If your world is small, replace 61440 with 6144. If you don't have a high-power PC, replace JOBNUM=8 with JOBNUM=2.

Your phone or window isn't wide enough to display the code box. If it's a phone, try rotating it to landscape mode.
Code: Select all
#!/bin/bash
HERE=`pwd`
rm -fr www/tiles
cd www && ln -nsf map.html index.html && cd ..
export MAPPERPARAMS="--min-y=-1000 --max-y=1000"
JOBNUM=8 MAPPERDIR=$HERE \
./mapper.sh $HERE -215,2,157 61440

Run the script using bash. For example:

Your phone or window isn't wide enough to display the code box. If it's a phone, try rotating it to landscape mode.
Code: Select all
bash ./makeleafmap.bash >& map.log &

Allow time ranging from a few minutes to a day or longer. When "jobs" or "ps ax" shows that the job is done, check the log file for errors.

You can disregard messages about "Mapping speed may improve" or "Unknown nodes". If there are no other errors, do something similar to the following to install the map on one of your websites:

Your phone or window isn't wide enough to display the code box. If it's a phone, try rotating it to landscape mode.
Code: Select all
MYSITEDIR=/var/www/mysite
mkdir -p           $MYSITEDIR
rm -fr             $MYSITEDIR/minemap
cp -a www          $MYSITEDIR/minemap
cp -a leaflet-hash $MYSITEDIR/

Replace /var/www/mysite with an absolute path for the document tree associated with any website that you host.

The link /minemap on that website should now go to a nice scrollable and zoomable map.

leaftest is by est31. leaftest relies on minetest-mapper-cpp, which is by Miroslav Bendik, Rogier-5, ShadowNinja, and sfan5.

Oh man I remember slaving over that Italy. I'm currently in Japan and my residence blocks most ports, but when I get back to the States I'd love to come back on and at least try to put that basilica in a respectable shape, hate to see it left unfinished like that. Oh man nostalgiaaaa~

ak399g / SAFR, thanks for writing.

I could simply send you the map and the _game. You could work on buildings, then, offline and send them back when you were satisfied.

Or, if you could get ssh access to an outside VPS, you might be able to tunnel through the firewall on the Japan side.

If you're interested in either approach, forum PM me or email me at: oldcoder@yahoo.com

For others, here's a scene from Little Italy, which I believe ak399g is referring to:
