Some people, including me noted very slow chunk load, server itself is fast, but network lag is very big (multisecond with 20 players), the reason can be: you (server) have not enough connection bandwidth or you are using internet in parallel heavily (like browsing, downloading etc). Check your upload speeds, there are tools that tell how much kb/s minetest server uses, maybe it needs less player slots open :).

I am supposed to have:
20 Mbps download to me
2 Mbps upload to players

Sustained speed tests confirm the 20 & 2 speeds. But my ISP doesn't have that written in stone. At least if what System Monitor is telling me about my network speeds is true. I often see my upload speeds peeking at 8 Mbps! Sustained speeds average around 1.6 Mbps

The current server settings allow for 27? players. I had it at 32 yesterday. I lowered it down and removed the kitten spawner at spawn after seeing all the lag. I also applied some network settings to the server that seems to speed things up. they also allow for longer viewing ranges. I might try lowering that again.

Less player slots means faster for connected players and many mad wannabe players. More slots means slower map loading and many players mad about that. I sux that Eastern Europe seems to have faster Internet speeds than we do in the US. Over here, fast Internet speeds cost! Too many shareholders wanting profits and no cares about how they get it.

CPU load level doesn't go higher than 25% on one of 8 cpus. Four actual cpus. Hyperthreading don't ya know.

At the time you wrote your msg, I was not using the Internet for other uses. And most Internet-capable software are configured to not send usage data or check for updates.

I did some very limited research, and I think you need at least 40 kbyte/sec (or 100 kbyte/sec for peak) of upload per player, at most it is 5-40 kbyte/sec (but avg is more like 10-20kbyte/sec at least for me). Calinou also said 100 kbyte/sec per player.

For 20 players - 2mbit is barely enough for not that active players.
If we say that >40 kbyte/sec is rare occurrence, then (40 * 20 / 1024) * 8 = >6 Mbit/sec upload, that will be a good starting point.
If we say that upload is in range 10-20 kbyte/sec on average, then 2-4 Mbit/sec, that is bare minimum I guess.

Since you also use internet (or even torrenting), that can lag as hell for everybody for periods of your activity. Server itself is fast, but network is slow.

I am not too concerned about the peak speeds because they don't last long. I watch the average speed.
My download speeds only max out when I first start watching a movie. Then it drops back down with occasional high peaks as the stream gets updates.
My max_users setting is set for about 4 players higher than I really want. Those 4 slots rarely get used.
This server is aimed at players that use mobile devices. It turns out that most of those are kids. Those kids mostly just want to stand in one place and chat.
I have a few serious players/builders. But I doubt if I will ever get and keep many because I will not install a lot of mods. I am still installing mods for now until I start getting complaints that players can't log in. I figure that most serious builders will leave and go to other servers that have more mods so they can use more building material types such as Xanadu or ESM
When the server is full and laggy, some players leave. When empty, players come. Self-regulating :)
I still am fiddling with network and player settings and trying for a decent tradeoff between speed and number of players.
Maybe JustTest will come back with it's high player capacity and my server will die. IDK. We will find out

Server Down

by 843jdc » Thu Jul 21, 2016 07:15

Server is down to install Windows 10.
We can thank Microsoft for one problem after another problem after another problem........
13 hours later and I'm still waiting for the actual installation to start.
And if the problem with Nvidia graphics cards has not been fixed, then all this will be for nothing.

Server is back up.

I only had one problem using a Windows 10 DVD and that was when grub2 couldn't find the Windows file to load because the file was updated or changed. (I'm guessing there.) A relatively quick Google search, a few typed commands using a USB copy of Fedora and the problem was solved xD At least I didn't have to re-install Fedora all over again.

I wasn't too happy about discovering Flexnet hiding in my MBR. From what I've read, either Adobe or Autodesk software is responsible for it.

Thanks for the endorsement :)

I have a a MAJOR problem running this server. It is 'holding my computer hostage'.

Installing or changing out hardware requires me to shut down the server. Though not for too long if things go right. I have held off on doing that for several days but I need to do so very soon.

Switching over to Windows is impossible. I have apps that can only be run under Windows. WINE won't work for those. I need to use those apps very soon. That requires the server to be shut down until I reboot into Linux. I have no other computer capable of hosting the MT server. I either solve this problem or I will have to shut down the server permanently. That I am extremely reluctant to do. Too many players have put too much time into it to do that to them. Or find someone else to host the server. And what would sneke, busse, vanek2 do without Cash's World to grief? haha

However, I have a solution to that problem that I will work on tonight. The server will be down for an hour or so while I do that.

The Server is now on a "New" Computer

by 843jdc » Sun Aug 07, 2016 07:00

The server has been moved a dedicated computer.
A dual-core Athlon 64-bit 2.6 GHz, 4GB DDR2, 320GB HDD SATA2

While I see lag is a bit higher using /status, the cpu load isn't too bad and the network speed is the same.

We'll see how it works when I get a 'full-load' of players.

Meanwhile I will enjoy being able to do whatever I wish using my main computer again xD

Bad Players

by 843jdc » Sun Aug 07, 2016 07:07

Listen up people.
This server is PvP!!! Killing players IS ALLOWED! If you don't want to be killed, stay in areas protected by protection blocks. Spawn and roads are also safe places.

I temper the PvP with a bit of creative by removing prot blocks, locked chests, and steel doors that are in the way of players that are building creatively. If you have a tiny cobblestone 'hut' and someone has placed a prot block beside it, I likely will not remove it. But it never hurts to ask me. I have noticed that some of the players making the most complaints are themselves griefers xD

Re: The Server is now on a "New" Computer

With a 'full load' of players, I have 1.4 second of lag and riding carts is jerky :(
Network speeds are the same and the cpu load isn't that much. I think the problem is with the SATA2 HDD. I wonder if I can fit a 2.7GB (and growing) map into a ram drive on a computer with only 4GB of RAM?

I could also try installing the SSD into that computer and if that speeds things up, buy another SSD. Though that is more money than I want to spend right now.

I'll try the ram drive first. Using a SSD on a SATA2 bus doesn't sound like it will be all that fast. Maybe run an unexplore script on the map first to shrink it. One day I *will* learn how to read the map file using another program. :)

Congrats on the switch over! Server runs great, sometimes laggy, but fine. I was on for a few hours today with no real issues. :)

It doesn't. The HDD is constantly 'making noise'. It's slow compared to the SSD. But it isn't too bad. Introduces some lag. Installing Fedora 24 on the computer last night took a long time. And the computer hangs up when rebooting. I need to cycle the power every time.

I'm about to transfer the MT files to my main computer and work on them there. Though the network transfer will take time also. the map file is currently over 3 GB! xD

I love the dome :) What was that sci-fi flic that had spaceships with flora-filled domes? The crews were ordered to jettison the domes, destroy them, then return to earth. A crew member of only one ship did not do that. The crew would race around the ship in buggies.

I forgot to come visit. But I plan to take a good tour of the map before bringing the server back up. I will be able to look almost everywhere without being interrupted and causing me to forget to finish the tour :)

Vana Talinn Tower? Someone likes good liqueur xD

That was "Silent running". Good to see that one of its domes managed to land on your worlds and survive there ;-)

Ok. Past time to quit playing on @Test@ and get serious about getting CW back up and running.
