[Mod] The Bones Mod [1.02] [bones] - Making death hurt

by Bad_Command_ » Thu Jun 28, 2012 23:39

The Bones Mod

Bones introduces a survival feature to minetest: it makes death...a pain. When players die, they leave bones behind. The bones contain ALL of the player's inventory.

The bones are locked while they are fresh. This means that only the player can pick their own bones at first. They stay fresh for a short period of time (by default, 2 hours). After the bones get old, they can be picked by anyone!

Bones are picked just as if they are a chest, however inventory cannot be stored or moved within bones.

The mod is on github.

Dependencies:
worldtime forums|github|download now

Downloads:
Version 1.02(minetest 0.4.3+ required)
Version 1.01(minetest 0.4.1 and earlier)
Version 1.00

Configuration:
The time it takes for bones to age can be set in config.lua.

License:
LGPL 2.1 for code
CC BY-SA for textures

The mod is currently running on mt1.gameboom.net port 30000.

I'm definitely open to different textures if anyone can offer something better. There's not much that can be done with 16x16 pixels, however something HD would be great.

Bailey - your textures seem a little garbled. I'm not sure what's going on with them.

Nice mod Bad_Command_ maybe you could include a death sword in your mod which kills players the minute you hit them with
the sword then we would teach those greifes whose boss!

@Josh, sure, and then if griefers had the sword...

I like it!
I think it should drop a large amount of scorched stuff (or something like that) when mined.

Yeah if greifers had the sword they could kill us. But if we used some tricky & confusing code to unlock the crafting for the sword we would have to type it in command or something then craft it! Also the crafting should be really tricky to remember say this:

x=mese
i=mese stick [Maybe we could get mese sticks from a mod or something]
9=steel block

We could craft it like this: The command could also be something like: /unlock/crafting/deathsword/

xxx
x9x
i i i
Is this possible?

I actually made a sword like that (for my own usage >:>), so it's possible

nonono you're not making it complex enough.

First, require the "player" to construct the sword handle (say with wood, a bit of steel, some junglegrass to wrap the handle like the way some are wrapped in fine leather lacings).

Then, they should gather and craft together items that would make up the basis of a blade, e.g. the above mese and steel mixture... but! require the "player" to forge this blade mixture with a furnace (and make it take a lot of coal and a long time to finish) to get an actual blade.

Then finally require them to craft the forged blade and handle together with some additional materials to make the complete sword.

If you really want to improve it...try running the mod on a local map. Put the textures you made in and run it. See what it looks like, and maybe post some screenshots.

I like the bones on the side and on top more than mine. I'm not sure about the skull: it kinda makes me think that it is the skull of one of those 'grey' aliens. Not that I think my skull is much better: it really reminds me of the South Park depiction of Canadians which I for some reason find mildly insulting.

Nice idea Josh but I think such a sword would be better in its own mod.

Blood and gore is great fun, but I don't think it is the best idea to put it in this mod. It might turn off some of the younger players who have very protective parents: I've heard that some of them are not allowed to play minecraft because of the zombie skeleton things they have there. Hopefully, bones as-is won't set them off...

Must try this. I always wanted a basement filled with the corpses of my enemies~ You can collect and build with your bones like any other block, right?

Yep, they are just like chests.

I like to bury my old bones in the dirt, then put a gravestone on them.

Enemies can go on the top of a fence post as a warning! =)

You know what I thought about was once you killed your enemy, instead of a bone block, a coffin instead would appear and it would be 5 - 8 blocks deep underground. Then you would have to grave rob it to collect the loot.

Love that idea. Instead of a head, you put their bones on a pike. :D I should add this mod to my medieval castle world. >:D

Perhaps a variation of both? With a little stone grave marking where you died? Once you dig down deep enough, you have to bust the coffin open, revealing the bones. Only then could you get your loot back. If I could code in LUA, I'd do it myself.

...god, I'm morbid. xD

Gambit, you should totally add support for this mod in MineToon. That'd be wonderful.
