Recipe shows you what and where to place items in your crafting space.
For gunpowder it doesn't matter where you put 1 coal_lump and 1 gravel
For tnt you need a certain pattern in your craft space:
row 1 (upper): nothing, wood, nothing
row 2 (middle): wood, gunpowder, wood
row 3 (lower): nothing, wood, nothing

Yep. I tried it myself and others said that it works too.
