This mod changes the leafdecay. Instead of dropping saplings as items, it drops them as falling nodes. So they plant themselves. No need to pick them up.
Now continues as part of no_itemdrop. The versions posted here are outdated.

maybee you could count the number of leaves in an average tree and then spawn a falling sapling-node with a probability of 1/(avgLeaveCount-1), the other saplings would still be dropped.
