It's relatively rare ore. But what can be done with it?
No golden pickaxe, shovel, axe, hoe,… No any other craft item. Nothing.

I suppose it is intented to be analog of money in multiplayer game, when player can exchange for gold what he needs, in simple terms, buy it.

To bribe the devs, of course...

Ahhh i see the problem here, but luckily i have a solution.
We need to add an alchemy lab node (similar to the furnace), that will convert useless gold into cookies.
That way you will have use for the gold, but at the same time you might not run out of cookies.

As you pointed out. Gold has value in multiplayer. We use gold ingots as currency in our vending machines. Naturally the players follow suite when making trades. They trade in gold ingots, to spend in the shops. You may craft a skeleton key from one gold ingot in MTG now. But once again, only has use in multiplayer.

Those vending machines must have some BIG coin slots 0_o

How about a mod where you take a gold ingot, set it on an anvil, hit it with a hammer... and it turns into gold coins?

same could be done for copper as well (and maybe even bronze)

On JT2 server gold armor has more healing power than all other armors combined, even tho it lacks durability.

As for singleplayer, there is something known as a gold block. This is what a gold block looks like.

So no, gold is not just limited to use as a currency. It can (and even is) used for building too :P

In Minetest Game, gold ingots can be used for crafting:

The gold block can be in turn be crafted to:
  • Gold block stair
  • Gold block slab

Yes, the use of gold ingots in Minetest Game is very limited without any mods. It makes sense to use it as a currency because it does not really have a pretty low intrinsic value.

In my easy vending machines mod, gold ingots are used as the default currency.
In my mod “Minetest Game Plus”, a couple of decorational luxury blocks are added, because I too felt a lack of uses for gold ingots.

I hope someone will take my ingot mod idea and run with it :P

Maybe particles could be used to look like coins dropping when the ingot is hit with the hammer ; )

It's the most awesomeiest idea EVER! (well.., I think so anyway)

Wuzzy, every use you mentioned (other than the luxury blocks) was already pointed out in prior posts :P
