I just use GIMP... It is nice if you can use. I would like to help if you have problems with it.

It is also released under the GNU GPL, which means you can grab the latest sources (yes, even >= 1.0) and compile it yourself.

The version on the website has some niceties though, like being digitally signed by David Capello (the main dev), so you are sure you're getting the legit version. It also allows you to show your support to such a fine piece of software.

I once read a nice analogy: "using GIMP for pixel art is like killing a mosquito with a nuclear bomb". A more spot-on analogy would be "using GIMP for pixel art is like using Microsoft Word/<insert your favorite text processor> to edit `init.lua`". Sure, it does the job, but 90% of the stuff that comes with it is unneeded/ill-suited for the task.

I personally use it mainly for other things, but it works well with pixel artistry as well.

(I love using sphere designer filter. It makes really nice planets.)

Edit: GIMP comes with some linux distros, and this editor here doesn't even support linux, which I use...

I didn't see the github, so oops. Also, Windows is it's own thing, while MacOSX is Unix based, like Linux. They are not the same, but anyhow...

I might try compiling this weekend, but for now I have have too much school...

Weird, their Github mentions Linux and their FAQ mentions an issue of resizing the application's window for Linux users along with some instructions about compiling.

EDIT: I'm not sure if this helps, I have never used a machine with Linux. What is the difference between Distros and Linux?
EDIT2: Now that I check, I think only the full version is available for Linux, so not for free. :/

Eh, I was able to compile the free version for linux. Just "cmake ." and "make" (the github version)

It appears that aseprite is now a package in the 14.04 repositories.
