I take a look into a Minecraft TP and found a lot of black/white tga files. Can someone tell me what they are used for?

maybe they were using them for bump mapping? You'd get a better result with .tga because they can store more info and in a low pixel image not everything needs to be square. but I think they phased away from that format, have they not?

also, they're being black and white would result in cleaner, smoother definition when bump mapping (thought I should add that) and that would be for height map, bump mapping (not normal mapping)

this is just a thought, might not be the true answer.

I found different versions of the same TP. In some of them I found tga, in others not.

But some textures are black/white and I think they use this to colorize them dynamically instead of predefined colors. I tried to colorize them, but it is difficult to hit the right color

this may sound like a dumb suggestion (yes, I can get dumber) :D

I'm not sure if a MC user can tell me something about the Minetest technology. It might work totally different

it would be best to ask one of the more prominent texture pack artists directly, rather than on the general forum
