Use a WebGL engine?

by taikedz » Wed Jan 25, 2017 20:16

Hello

OK so I guess I might get a smackdown for even mentioning this.... but I was wondering if the WebGL 2 implementation from Firefox makes any difference to (non-)plans to port the Minetest client to the browser?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TT7ugKuUMv0

I am presuming this is more of an Irrlicht thing than minetest proper, but if an engine for supporting WebGL2 came into being, and were multi-platform (Nix/Win/Mac), would there be any interest in leveraging it for the client, or is this too much of a re-work to be even humanly possible, let alone practical.....?

I'm tired of these bullshit topics being all over the place.
Here's it spelled out:
MINETEST WILL NOT RUN IN YOUR BROWSER

WebGL is just regular OpenGL and will probably work in Irrlicht. However nobody is going to port everything to JS, Emscripten is not the ideal way of doing it. Also Minetest is heavily dependent on having a working filesystem, plus you can't do UDP packets in the browser and font rendering will either be slow and half-broken or working and a mess. Have fun with unmodded singleplayer MT and 3 fps.
