Princess Rainbowface - For Girl Whose Brother Died

Why:
I am working on a subgame called Princess Rainbowface dedicated to a little girl whose brother died in a car accident at age 6. Here is a picture of him and his gofundme:

Both kids go to the school I work at and I can tell you they are absolutely wonderful. I spent a lot of time with Steven last year as his Substitute Pre-K Teacher.

Gameplay:
You will be playing as Princess Rainbowface who uses Rainbow Magic to blast monsters and bad people and turn them happy. She is a rough tough atypical Princess who is super buff, can punch down trees, and likes wearing a bikers outfit. She must explore dungeons and treacherous areas to rescue Unicorns and Princes. An idea I like is that she has a Rainbow Dragon that she can ride. Perhaps one of the quests is to rescue him. I have lots ideas from the kids at School as well to post.

First goal will be to set up the basic "Rainbow Heart" spell and finding mobs that work well with it especially ones that make it easy for me to turn them friendly when their "health" runs out, or if they even just reach a health threshold.

How You Can Help:
I will be writing out an official list of what I will need but if you would like to donate content, code, or even time helping out it would be super appreciated! I'm planning on setting up a .git for the prototype and also having an area for content submissions. Even giving me info on mods that could be potentially useful would be awesome!

I think you can make a end for the subgame, when she makes "all" the people happy, and defeat sadness, who create the monsters that make the people bad, sad or angry!

Putting in references to him is tricky because I don't want to trigger any sadness from them. I do absolutely want to put an art gallery in so that he can achieve his dream of being an artist and he'd be world known but his Mom has to give permission. She seemed interested but there can be no grey area.

I really like the idea of the "end" where everyone is happy. I was even thinking that some areas are "dark" and evil looking but when you beat the boss and he is made happy the entire area becomes bright and happy. Kind of a lifting of a blighted area. I have no idea how I'd be able to do that, perhaps there is some way to trigger texture packs? It might be too complicated but it is an interesting idea.

Thanks for your interest in all this :) I think that even if the game doesn't become commercial just the fact that she has something fun to play to take her away from all that pain would be awesome. Take care!

well, i think the "reference" idea isn't so good, well reading what you wrote, i can suggest something more simple and easy to do!

-When you defeat a little boss, you got a draw from her, when you have 9 you can craft in a happiness magic wand piece, when you have 3 pieces you can do a happiness magic wand, with that you defeat every sadness, angry or darkness with one hit, and he become an unicorn friend!
i think of help you with textures and some code in general, i am very interested about what will happen with the girl (i don't want that happen something similar with the situation of a friend i had...) simply you need to make this to make "dark bosses" simply, make that when he be in an area, everything in a radius of 12 blocks, with the enough darkness that will make everything look sad!
A detail, make Princess Rainbow emit light in a radius of 3-5 blocks, to show she is happy!
I will help you in what i can!

I will wait for that, i don't know how you will sell that game, i mean licensing of minetest_game or you will do it from scratch?

Selling it would be great but the first goal is just to have something for her to enjoy. Selling is just a potential option and why wouldn't I be able to sell it? Even the LGPL bit is only the code.

He only has to provide source code for the Minetest engine (if there are no core modifications, a link to the Minetest official git page would probably be sufficient). The only tricky bit is that the Minetest engine would have its own license attached to it which is separate from the subgame license. Also, Github only offers free hosting for projects which use a certain subset of open source licenses (in particular, the license must allow anyone to sell the software).

I have been thinking about just putting Linux on but she is only 8 so I think it might be too much for her though I had a friend telling me "Elementary" is good and actually easier than Windows.

Perhaps we could chat this weekend? Also I was thinking perhaps Adventuretest or RPGtest could serve as a base since it already has some stuff added. Adventuretest has the magic missile spell which could be converted into the "heart" spell. I will make a list of the top gameplay features needed and then basically a wishlist of what else. My kiddos at school want to help out too so I think this project has a ton of purpose.

I like that you teach the kiddos about technology and engineering (well, not to make an advanced linux distro, but at least simple things) maybe someone of them, someday will do something good that help the humanity, maybe!



i don't know if is better start from the minetest_game, because is better start with something simple, you can add some good stuff from the other subgames, reading the code, and thinking how make a similar thing!

-i know she only have "8" but learn to use Linux or Ubuntu, isn't so hard.
Linux isn't UNIX (in some way) so will be easier!
or use Elementary OS, only be sure there is Minetest for that distro!

And don't worry i want help, looks like a good project with a good reason to do it, so i will be happy to help you!
Only keep it normal and nice for the girl!

RPGtest is still WIP. There are lots of bugs. I wouldn't use it for a project...
It has lots of (unfinished) features which this game doesnt need. The graphic style is much different to the mt style. Mods wont work, because they often need the default mod (RPGtest has an own one)...

I'm thinking about just linking the Princess Rainbowface forums with the Sandbox ones. I have to get my taxes done but then I can chat a bit.

How I was planning on starting is messing with the mobs redo and/or esmobs and take the magic missile spell from Adventuretest and for the mobs try to make it so they turn friendly after they take enough damage and then with the magic missile spell make it shoot a "heart" instead. Also instead of "life" I was going to turn the healthbar into magic crystals that the monsters are "stealing". Then I was going to try to make a quest to go find a unicorn or rainbow dragon mount, perhaps with a boss at the end. I was also thinking that maybe when you hit a mob with the heart spell it could have the effect from the "love bomb" like in Don's Mod. I think that is the most basic gameplay to prototype.

Some Questions I Have:

The subgame is based in minetest_game?
How i have an account in the subgame forum?
I will have credit for the code and textures i will do?
I accept that the content i will do for this game, be usable for commercial purposes, but anyways i want to know what licenses i can choose...

Also, i have this suggestions:

-Not only make a princess, also make a prince or knight for the boys! ()

-Make a way when you are of the darkness side

-Add some easter egg or reference to the brother of the girl? (i don't know, maybe, only to remember him)

-Make two ways in the normal game:
-Survival (well, i don't know what name in really, this is the idea: You are princess, but there isn't any quest to complete)
-Quest (Where the princess goes to defeat sadness the boss)

-The enemies in the game, SHOULDN'T be scary, they should be cute, it's better make it for everyone, everything should be cute, if it's for the girl, it's better the game don't be scary!

-i will help you in everything i can, the only thing i want, it's that the girl be happy with this, i will try to give my best with this!
i will dedicate all my time to this!

Since the purpose of "D.'s Sandbox" is supposed to be the new Sandbox (if you've checked out that site and seen what it is about) I figure this project is a great way to try out the Minetest engine and learn it.

I really like your ideas! I'm not sure I mentioned it but one idea inspired by a kiddo is that where the "sad" bosses are in the world is dark and gloomy but once you cheer them up the entire place springs to life. Probably not so easy to do but sounds fun. Maybe kinda like Mario Sunshine?

Also here is a list of ideas generated from the kiddos:

For the mobs we could use the goblins maybe. Or there is the Cubic Mobs mod.

I think your idea for the two different gamemodes is great. Basically survival and story mode :) Perhaps two subgames that could use a lot of the same code. Storymode would have a custom map. It'd probably need its own subgame because of the custom/specific NPCs.

Also an idea I forgot to mention is that she could leave a little rainbow path behind her when she walks. I think we could even use the trail mod and I think there is a tracks one too.

We should probably make it so that if you hit a friendly creature it does no damage and also doesn't make them rage after you. I'm fine with whatever mobs mod makes life easiest as well, those two just seem the most developed and easy to tweak.

i once made a stupid dragon mod(based on the enderdragon from minecraft, but you could ride him. i never put it up(mostly cuz i don't know how, and the model is stupid, but if you want, i could figure somthing out to make it so you can use it.)
