Horrible new sounds

by celeron55 » Sat Jul 27, 2013 18:00

Recently, in some unimaginable way, some terrible new sounds ended up in minetest_game.

The grass and sand walk sounds are so much worse than before that I've had to, for the first time ever, use Minetest's ability to turn off sounds.

Propose better sounds here. If such is not found, I'll put back the old ones.

I like how there are more sound effects in recent builds, but if you can find better ones, then go ahead.

Why don't we get a sound recorder, go into the backyard and get some real sounds? that would be intresting.

Well okay, I don't understand you then and will leave it as is. It's not like I play it anyway...

I totally agree celeron55 and i think many others would agree, sand and grass are especially bad, too crunchy and too loud compared to stone. Perhaps there is some laziness in finding new sounds because it's one of those small things that gets overlooked, it's down to us and myself to find better ones.
For my moonrealm mod i'm actually using gravel sounds at a low volume because they, amusingly, sound SOFTER than sand or grass sounds. One of the gravel sounds makes a good crunchy snow sound too.

EDIT The 4th sound Linxx posted has potential, im into music production so i'll see what i can edit up. I think a separate sound for sand is needed to, and one for swimming in water perhaps (such as in my trail mod). Also for snow, possibly wood too.

Are there any foley artist who could make sound effects for Minetest?

Once installed I tend to use the Ambience sound mod for my sounds...

One of the best things that could be done for Minetest is adding support for sound packs.

Why do you expect anyone to create soundpacks if there is even nobody who can do it for upstream?

It might motivate people to create and offer soundpacks. Changing the upstream sounds is like changing minetest_game, there would always be someone to disagree.

Replace soundpacks with gamemodes.

I intend to edit some reasonable sounds for grass and sand first, then wood and perhaps others later as suggestions for new sounds. I have some samples from freesound to work on.
